Hyperhidrosis Treatment South Shields

Welcome to Dr Matla Aesthetics, I am an aesthetics doctor and GP offering Botox for Hyperhidrosis in South Shields. I have fantastic testimonials online that highlight how happy people are with my service.

What is Hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition that causes excessive sweating– perspiration beyond the amount needed for the body to maintain its constant internal core temperature of 37°C. Hyperhidrosis can be localised affecting areas such as the face, armpits, palms of the hands and soles of the feet or can be generalised where most of the body perspires excessively.  Hyperhidrosis is not a harmful condition but it can have a severe psychological impact on self-esteem and confidence.

FAQ’S ABOUT HYPERHIDROSIS TREATMENT

WHAT CAUSES HYPERHIDROSIS?

Sweating is your body’s mechanism to cool itself. Your nervous system automatically triggers your sweat glands when your body temperature rises. Sweating also normally occurs, especially on your palms, when you’re nervous.

In many cases, hyperhidrosis has no apparent cause but is often thought to be the result of a problem with the part of the nervous system that controls sweating. This is known as primary hyperhidrosis. Hyperhidrosis that does have an identifiable cause is known as secondary hyperhidrosis.

When you have hyperhidrosis sweat glands work overtime for no obvious reason, producing sweat that you don’t need. Focal hyperhidrosis commonly results from certain odours and foods, such as coffee, citric acid, chocolate, peanut butter and spices. Emotional stress, especially anxiety.

HOW DOES BOTOX TREAT HYPERHIDROSIS?

Botulinum toxin is frequently referred to as Botox® which is the brand name and original form of the drug produced by the company Allergan. The toxin works by blocking the chemical at the end of the nerves so that it cannot work on the glands or muscles. In the case of the sweat glands, it turns them off to reduce excessive sweating.

It requires multiple small injections of the toxin a few centimetres apart in the armpit. It can also be used for treating hyperhidrosis of the hands, feet, parts of the body and the face.

WHAT WILL THE HYPERHIDROSIS TREATMENT FEEL LIKE?

You may find the injections uncomfortable but most people do not describe the treatment as painful as numbing cream will be applied to the areas.

HOW SOON WILL I SEE RESULTS?

People who receive Hyperhidrosis Botox injections usually see results a few days after treatment. The full effects are usually noticeable within two weeks.

WHAT CARE IS REQUIRED AFTER HYPERHIDROSIS TREATMENT?

After the hyperhidrosis treatment, you will be able to go home and carry on with your normal activities. We recommend that you avoid using deodorants or perfumed products on the area for the next 12 – 24 hours to avoid irritation.

HOW OFTEN DO I NEED HYPERHIDROSIS TREATMENT?

Botox is not a permanent solution for excessive sweating. A single hyperhidrosis treatment can last from 4 to 12 months.

WHAT ELSE CAN I DO TO HELP MY EXCESSIVE SWEATING
  • Try to identify what foods and activities trigger your sweating so you can avoid these.
  • Try special powdered deodorants that contain aluminium chloride
  • Wear loose-fitting clothes to minimise signs of sweating
  • Try socks that absorb moisture and change them at least twice a day if possible
  • For feet wear leather shoes and try to wear different shoes day to day
  • Do not wear tight clothes or synthetic fabrics such as nylon

WHAT OTHER AREAS CAN BOTOX TREAT?
A study in 1994 reported the benefit of botulinum (Botox) for reducing the appearance of facial wrinkles; since then, it has been used as a cosmetic treatment.

Other uses for BOTOX® are to treat certain eye disorders such as crossed eyes (strabismus) and uncontrolled blinking (blepharospasm). To treat muscle stiffness/spasms or movement disorders (such as cervical dystonia, torticollis), and to reduce the cosmetic appearance of wrinkles.

The most common areas for the use of Botox are the frown lines between the eyes, the furrows of the forehead, the crow’s feet at the sides of the eyes, and creases in the neck.
