PRP Hair Loss treatment is suitable for both men and women. It helps to prevent hair loss and stimulate new hair growth. PRP (platelet-rich plasma) utilises your own blood platelets to stimulate hair growth. The purpose of using PRP in hair restoration is to stimulate inactive hair follicles or newly implanted hair follicles into a new active growth phase. The hair loss treatment promotes also provides nourishment to the thinning hair follicles. Our hair loss treatment is a non-surgical procedure that can result in a thicker fuller and healthier head of hair. It is a safe procedure with minimal side effects. At Dr Matla’s Aesthetics, you will only be treated by qualified medical professionals giving you peace of mind.
What is PRP Hair Loss Treatment?
PRP is a concentrated plasma that contains a high concentration of platelets and growth factors. Growth factors are essential for tissue regeneration. PRP is commonly used in wound healing. This is essential for stimulating tissue regeneration, providing scaffolding for collagen synthesis, skin renewal, and cell growth. PRP will accelerate the skin’s repair process which results in a thicker dermis with softer fine lines and wrinkles, less scarring and improved skin tone.
PRP has played an essential role in sports medicine for several years prior to being introduced to aesthetic medicine. By stimulating collagen and elastin growth, the platelets can kick-start the healing process. A favourite treatment for many celebrities around the world.
PRP rejuvenates the skin and hair. when combined with hyaluronic acid fillers, the results would be even better.
HAIR LOSS TREATMENT NEAR MORPETH
It’s normal to lose between 50 and 100 hairs a day. That’s because our bodies continually grow new hair and shed old hair. This shedding is not a sign of hair loss. A receding hairline, bald spot, or overall thinning is a sign of hair loss. Hair loss can also show up in some surprising ways. This can happen if you have recently:
– Had a baby
– Recovered from a major illness or had surgery
– Underwent cancer treatment
– Lost 20 pounds or more
– Developed a mild case of a disease called Alopecia areata which causes your immune system to attack your hair follicles
– Got rid of psoriasis on your scalp
Dr Matla can tell you whether your hair may start to grow again on its own. While your hair may regrow on its own, he may recommend treatment to help it grow more quickly. Treatment can be essential to prevent further hair loss.
HAIR LOSS TREATMENT PLAN
PRP FOR HAIR LOSS FOR BOTH MEN & WOMEN MORPETH
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is a non-surgical method of hair loss treatment and hair restoration for women and men.
PRP contains platelets concentrated up to 5x the normal blood value. Dr Matla then takes the PRP, also called “liquid gold” because of its colour, and injects it throughout the scalp. No medications are required pre or post-procedure. PRP contains many growth factors that stimulate hair follicles and can be performed up to every month based on how much hair growth is required.
PRP is a great solution for both men and women, especially when hair transplant surgery is not an option. PRP injections can stimulate new hair growth in men who suffer from androgenetic alopecia, otherwise known as male pattern baldness as well as women who suffer from this condition. Dr Matla targets the areas of the scalp where the hair is currently thinning. The procedure will take approximately 30 minutes from the time your blood is drawn until the PRP is injected into your scalp.
A “natural” way to restore hair
PRP has been used for its healing properties in other areas of medicine over the years such as in joints and muscle tissues. It is also used as a cosmetic treatment for the face too, where PRP is combined with micro-needling. This has been labelled the “Vampire Facelift” because it stimulates collagen and rejuvenates the face nonsurgically.
Another factor that makes PRP so popular for patients looking to restore hair is that this is a “natural” way to restore hair. Most medications used to restore hair, such as Propecia, have significant side effects in men (such as erectile dysfunction). These medications are also contraindicated in women, especially those of childbearing age. PRP treatments can be used in tandem with hair transplantation to help accelerate hair growth. PRP treatments should be performed on average, every 4 to 6 weeks for three sessions. Most of the patients typically see new hair growth after the first 8-10 weeks. Nutritional supplements are also recommended as they can optimize the hair restoration process. Dr Matla will go over a comprehensive plan with you during your initial consultation.
PRP Hairloss FAQs
WHAT DOES PRP CONSIST OF AND HOW DOES IT HELP HAIR GROWTH?
Human blood is comprised primarily of red blood cells (RBC), as well as white blood cells (WBC), platelets, and plasma. By initiating the first step of coagulation, platelets are the key to the body’s ability to heal wounds. It is thought that by increasing the platelet count in a wounded area, the body’s healing to that area would be accelerated – explaining the use of PRP in wound healing. Its effects on promoting hair growth make it useful for the medical treatment of hair loss.
PRP is concentrated blood plasma that contains approximately 5x the number of platelets found in normal circulating blood. This is significant because the Platelets in the PRP contain proteins that promote the rate of tissue healing and regeneration within inactive hair follicles. Inside these platelets are a variety of intracellular structures such as glycogen (a form of glucose), lysosomes (which break down the proteins) and alpha granules (which contain clotting and growth factors that get released during the cell repair process).
In particular, the PRP-specific cells that cause hair growth include:
Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF): Cell growth, collagen and blood vessel formation
Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF): For blood vessel formation
Platelet-Derived Growth Factor (PDGF): for blood vessel, cell and skin formation
Transforming Growth-Factor-Beta (TGF-b): For a growth matrix between cells, bone metabolism.
Studies show that PRP can be a safe and effective hair loss treatment. PRP involves drawing a small amount of your blood, placing your blood into a machine that separates it into parts, and then injecting one part of your blood (the plasma) into the area with hair loss.
The entire procedure takes about 30 minutes and usually doesn’t require any downtime.
You will need to return for repeat injections. Most patients return once a month for 3 months and then once every 3 to 6 months.
Within the first few months of treatment, you may notice that you are losing less or minimal amounts of hair.
HOW SOON CAN I EXPECT RESULTS FROM PRP HAIR LOSS TREATMENT?
After receiving Platelet-Rich Plasma therapy it may take a little time for you to begin to see results. It is also necessary to attend follow-up sessions, typically monthly appointments for the first 3 months and then a further session after three to six months. Yearly maintenance sessions will help to keep the treatment effective from then on.
Of course, factors such as the amount of hair loss and the density of growth will vary from patient to patient, and your medical practitioner will be able to advise how many appointments will specifically be necessary. Typically, you can expect to begin seeing results after a third or fourth appointment.
WHAT OTHER TREATMENTS OR SOLUTIONS ARE AVAILABLE AND HOW EFFECTIVE ARE THEY?
Minoxidil (Rogaine): To use minoxidil, you apply it to the scalp as directed, usually once or twice a day.
- Stimulate hair growth
- Prevent further hair loss
Microneedling: Studies have shown that micro-needling can help stimulate hair growth. Men between the ages of 20 and 35 years old who had mild or moderate hereditary hair loss were treated with either:
- 5% minoxidil twice a day
- 5% minoxidil twice a day plus weekly micro-needling
Patients treated with minoxidil and micro-needling had significantly more hair growth.
Other studies have shown that using micro-needling along with another treatment, including platelet-rich plasma or a corticosteroid that you apply to the thinning area, helps improve hair growth.
Prescription medication for hair loss:
Finasteride (Propecia®): FDA-approved this medication to treat male pattern hair loss. When taken as directed, finasteride can:
- Slow down hair loss
- Stimulate new hair growth
Spironolactone: For women who have female pattern hair loss, this medication may be an option. It can:
- Stop further hair loss
- Increase hair thickness
Vitamins, minerals, and other supplements
Biotin, iron, or zinc prevents hair loss. You should only take biotin, iron, or zinc when your blood test shows that you have a deficiency. If your levels are normal, taking a supplement can be harmful.
Wigs and concealers
These cannot slow hair loss or help you regrow hair, they can boost your self-esteem. Another advantage is that a wig or concealer offers immediate results.
Hair transplant: If you have an area of thinning or balding due to male (or female) pattern baldness, a hair transplant is an option. This can be an effective and permanent solution, but very expensive.
IMPORTANT TO NOTE
Not every type of hair loss can be treated, but a doctor may be able to prevent further hair loss. It can take months before you see results from treatment. No one treatment works for everyone, even two people with the same type of hair loss. Sometimes, hair loss is stubborn and requires trying different treatments before finding one that works.
ARE THERE ANY DOWNSIDES OF PLATELET-RICH PLASMA THERAPY FOR HAIR LOSS?
There are very few side effects related to PRP. As the treatment is non-invasive and uses blood extracted from the patient themselves there is absolutely no recovery time required, and any discomfort caused by the treatment tends to pass almost immediately. Whilst it is a relatively expensive treatment the risk-free nature of PRP makes it an attractive and exciting prospect.
The main downside of PRP is that the patient still needs to be realistic about what the treatment will achieve. Whilst PRP has been proven to effectively promote the regrowth of hair, it is still only an improvement and will not result in miraculous results. PRP is effective in halting and reversing hair loss, especially when it has begun in the past five years, but it can not be expected to cause massive amounts of regrowth.
