Why PRP Hair Loss Treatment?

PRP is popular for hair loss because it’s autologous (your own blood), minimally invasive, and designed to support healthier follicles. Platelets contain growth factors that may help encourage follicles into a stronger growth phase and improve thickness over time. UK hair specialists note results aren’t guaranteed, and PRP won’t create new follicles where they’re no longer viable, so a consultation matters.

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) played an essential role in sports medicine for several years before being introduced to aesthetic medicine. By stimulating collagen and elastin growth, the platelets can kick-start the healing process. A favourite treatment for many celebrities around the world.

When combined with hyaluronic acid fillers, the results can be even more magically renewing for the scalp and hair regrowth.

PRP Hair Loss Treatment for Women

PRP Hair Loss treatment is suitable for both men and women. It helps to prevent hair loss and stimulate new hair growth. PRP (platelet-rich plasma) utilises your own blood platelets to stimulate hair growth. The purpose of using PRP in hair restoration is to stimulate inactive hair follicles or newly implanted hair follicles into a new active growth phase.

PRP Treatment also provides nourishment to the thinning hair follicles. Our hair loss treatment is a non-surgical procedure that can result in a thicker, fuller and healthier head of hair. It is a safe procedure with minimal side effects. At Dr Matla’s Aesthetics Clinic, you will only be treated by qualified medical professionals, giving you peace of mind.

Hair Loss Treatment using PRP

What is normal hair loss?

It’s normal to lose between 50 and 100 hairs a day. That’s because our bodies continually grow new hair and shed old hair. This shedding is not a sign of hair loss. A receding hairline, bald spot, or overall thinning is a sign of hair loss. Hair loss can also show up in some surprising ways.

Hair Loss can happen if you have recently:

  • Had a baby
  • Recovered from a major illness or had surgery
  • Underwent cancer treatment
  • Lost 20 pounds or more
  • Developed a mild case of a disease called Alopecia areata, which causes your immune system to attack your hair follicles
  • Got rid of psoriasis on your scalp

Dr Matla can tell you whether your hair may start to grow again on its own. While your hair may regrow on its own, he may recommend treatment to help it grow more quickly. Treatment can be essential to prevent further hair loss.

Testimonial

I have had three rounds of PRP hair loss treatment with Dr Matla. This was to help the regrowth of my hair, where it was thinning. He is such a lovely Doctor and very easy to talk to.

I was made to feel at ease straight away from my first consultation. He is very friendly and knowledgeable. The treatments themselves have been very effective, and I am seeing growth from my progress pictures already. I would definitely recommend him, and the clinic is very nice too.

PRP Hair loss FAQs

What is PRP and how does it work for hair loss?

PRP, or Platelet-Rich Plasma, is one of the treatments I find most rewarding to offer, because it works with your body rather than against it. We draw a small sample of your own blood, place it in a centrifuge to separate the plasma, and what we’re left with is a concentration of platelets approximately five times higher than normal circulating blood.

Those platelets are rich in growth factors that signal the body to repair and regenerate. In hair restoration, they work by reactivating dormant follicles and encouraging them back into an active growth phase. The key growth factors involved are Epidermal Growth Factor (cell growth and collagen formation), Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (blood supply to the scalp), Platelet-Derived Growth Factor (new cell and vessel formation), and Transforming Growth Factor-Beta (the growth environment between cells).

I always want patients to have realistic expectations: PRP cannot create new follicles where none exist, but where follicles are still present and simply weakened or dormant, the results can be genuinely impressive. At your consultation, I will give you an honest assessment of what I think is achievable for your particular pattern of hair loss.

How many sessions will I need and how soon will I see results?

For most patients, I recommend a course of three sessions spaced four to six weeks apart, followed by a maintenance session at six months and then annually to hold the results. If your hair loss is more advanced, we may discuss additional sessions at the consultation.

Results with PRP are gradual, and I think it’s important to be upfront about that from the start. Shedding often reduces within the first few months, and visible improvements in density and thickness typically become apparent after the third or fourth session, around the three-month mark. The full benefit of a course builds over six to twelve months as new growth cycles are established.

How quickly and how well you respond will depend on how long hair loss has been progressing, your general health, and whether we combine PRP with complementary treatments such as microneedling.

Is PRP hair loss treatment painful?

In my experience, the vast majority of patients find PRP much more comfortable than they expected. The injections are administered using very fine needles, and any discomfort is brief and mild. Some scalp tenderness during the procedure is normal, but it passes quickly.

Afterwards, you may notice some mild redness, warmth, or minor swelling at the injection sites for a few hours. This is entirely normal and a sign that the growth factors are doing their job. There is no significant downtime, and most of my patients return to their normal routine the same day.

If you have any concerns about sensitivity, please do mention it at your consultation, and we can discuss how to make the experience as comfortable as possible for you.

Is PRP safe, and are there any side effects?

PRP has an excellent safety record, and it is one of the reasons I am confident recommending it. Because we use your own blood, the risk of allergic reaction or rejection is extremely low. There is no surgery, no general anaesthetic, and no significant recovery period involved.

Side effects are generally mild and short-lived: some redness, minor swelling, or tenderness at the injection sites for a few hours after your session. It is also worth knowing that some temporary shedding can occur in the early weeks of a course as follicles transition between growth phases. This is a normal part of the process and not a sign that the treatment is failing.

That said, PRP is not suitable for everyone. It is not recommended for patients with active scalp infections, bleeding disorders, those taking blood-thinning medication, certain autoimmune conditions, or those currently undergoing cancer treatment. This is exactly why a proper medical consultation matters before we begin anything.

Who is a good candidate for PRP, and who is not suitable?

In my experience, PRP Hair Loss Treatment works best when hair loss is addressed earlier rather than later, when follicles are thinning but still present. Patients who tend to respond well include those with male or female pattern hair loss, menopausal hair thinning, postpartum hair loss, and androgenic alopecia, where the goal is to strengthen existing follicles before loss progresses further.

I will always be honest with patients about what PRP can and cannot do. It is unlikely to produce meaningful results where follicles have been fully lost for a prolonged period, because PRP cannot regenerate follicles that are no longer present. It is also not recommended for patients with blood disorders, those on anticoagulant medication, those with active scalp infections, or those currently receiving chemotherapy.

If you are unsure whether PRP hair loss treatment is right for you, please come in for a free consultation. I will assess your hair loss pattern, review your medical history, and give you a straightforward recommendation before any treatment is agreed upon.

How does PRP compare to hair transplant, minoxidil, and other treatments?

This is one of the questions I am asked most often, and I think it is an important one. PRP sits in a different category to most other hair loss treatments and, in many cases, works very well alongside them rather than instead of them.

Minoxidil is a daily topical solution that can slow hair loss and stimulate some regrowth, but it requires continuous use, and its effects are reduced if stopped. Studies show that combining minoxidil with microneedling improves results, and PRP can be used in the same complementary way.

Finasteride is a prescription oral medication for male pattern hair loss that works by reducing the hormone responsible for follicle miniaturisation. It is effective for many men but carries a risk of side effects, including sexual dysfunction, and cannot be used by women of childbearing age.

Hair transplant surgery is the most permanent solution for significant hair loss and can deliver excellent results, but it involves surgery, a recovery period, and considerably higher cost. I sometimes use PRP alongside transplantation to support healing and help transplanted follicles establish more quickly.

What sets PRP apart is that it is autologous, non-surgical, and works with your own biology. For patients who want to address hair loss proactively, who are not yet ready or suitable for surgery, or who want to maintain density between other treatments, it is often the most sensible and accessible place to start.

Why is PRP so popular as a hair loss treatment?

I think PRP has earned its reputation, and not just because of the results. There are several reasons patients keep choosing it.

First and foremost, it uses your own blood. There is no foreign substance, no risk of allergic reaction, and no side effect profile that comes with medications like finasteride. For patients who want an effective treatment without those concerns, PRP is a genuinely compelling option.

It is also quick and practical. A session takes approximately 30 minutes, there is no surgery or anaesthetic involved, and patients return to their normal routine the same day. That combination of effectiveness and accessibility is hard to match.

PRP for Hair Loss also has a long and well-established history in orthopaedics and sports medicine, where it has been used for tissue healing for many years. Its use in hair restoration follows the same biological principles. When combined with microneedling, results can be enhanced further still, and I will always discuss the best combination approach for your specific goals at consultation.

What should I do before and after PRP treatment?

A little preparation makes a real difference to how comfortable your session is and how well your body responds.

Before your appointment, arrive well hydrated and have eaten a light meal. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours beforehand and, where possible, avoid anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen in the days prior, as these can reduce platelet activity. If you are on any prescribed medication, please let me know at the consultation before making any changes.

After treatment, avoid washing or massaging the scalp for 24 hours and steer clear of strenuous exercise, saunas, and steam rooms for 48 hours. Avoid applying products such as dry shampoo, hairspray, or styling products directly to the scalp on the day of your session.

Some mild redness or sensitivity for a few hours after your PRP hair loss treatment is entirely normal.

If you have any concerns in the days following your session, please do not hesitate to get in touch, and I will be happy to help.

How much does PRP hair loss treatment cost in Newcastle?

For most patients, I recommend a course of three sessions. Maintenance sessions at six-monthly or annual intervals are then recommended to hold the results long-term.

I will always give you a personalised treatment plan and full cost breakdown at your consultation, based on what I think your hair loss specifically requires rather than a one-size-fits-all package.

To help make treatment accessible, we offer flexible payment options through Klarna and Clearpay. Full pricing is available on the prices page of the website.
